Broadband Speed Tests - Some Benefits Broadband usage levels around the UK are rising and if Governmental targets are to be met every home will have access to at least a 2Mbps connection in time for the 2012 Olympic games. Some are not convinced that this is an achievable figure, but others are convinced that this is in fact a conservative estimate given the rate at which broadband speeds have increased since its inception. Whichever way you look at it, broadband speeds in the UK have been on the increase over the years and now customers can access up to 50Mbps connections should they wish. However, the type of speed you get will be affected by many factors, some of which will be out of your hands. If you`ve already got a broadband connection in your home and you`re dissatisfied or curious about the real-world speed of your connection, or if you`ve got dial up and want to imagine how broadband might benefit you, then you`ll want to check out a broadband speed test. A broadband speed test is a simple experiment you can do in a matter of minutes. First you`ll need to find a speed test site online and many broadband providers and price comparison sites offer them. Next you`ll need to start the test. The tests work by firstly sending a small file from their servers directly to your PC using your broadband connection. The speed at which the transfer occurs will usually be displayed in real time and recorded at the end and this will give you an accurate picture of your current download speed. Then a small file will be transferred from your PC back to the speed test servers, recording the upload capabilities of your connection. Armed with these two pertinent pieces of info you`ll be well placed to cut through the advertising smoke screens and see the true download and upload speed of your connection. This information can be used in a number of ways. If you`re experiencing any connection problems then using a broadband speed test can help provide you with the information that will make your provider sit up and take notice of your complaints. It may also provide them with specific info to help speed the problem to a resolution. Secondly it can help when you`re choosing a new broadband provider. Comparing the speed of your current service with the speeds offered by your potential provider will allow you to gage the improvements that are available to you and knowing your current line speed is essential if you want to effectively use price comparison sites to change providers. The good news is that once you`ve decided to make a change there`s not too much work involved, provided you`ve come to the end of your contracted period. You`ll need to let your current and new providers know your intentions and in a few days you`ll get a MAC code to help you migrate your service and a date at which the migration will take place.
